Thailand

For many first time travellers Thailand sometimes tops the list , as it’s the perfect place to set out solo. It is affordable, easy to travel through, friendly, full of other travellers and good on the palette. There are multiple daily flights from all over the world arriving in Bangkok, with several connecting flights to beach places such as Krabi, Phuket and Koh Samui. One is spoilt for choice and can do things like cooking courses, playing with elephants, scuba diving or participate in meditation retreats.

France

Paris might be for lovers but solo travellers can also find romantic treats at almost every turn in France. You can witness the glorious heritage from the banks of the River Seine, climb up to the Sacre Coeur with its street artists at Montmartre, sample the exquisite cuisine, chic boutiques and the outstanding cultural scene are ideal for enjoying the finer things the country has to offer. Also explore the magnificent southern coastline from Nice if you are a beach lover and sun-seeker.

Australia

This is a great destination for first time solo travellers, it’s friendly, fun and full of opportunities to meet people. You can start off with Sydney or Melbourne which have an energetic vibe and eating, drinking and stay suit all budgets and tastes. While the northern territory of the country has some of the best national parks, South Australia offers great vineyards and beautiful coastline, you can also head off the beaten track and explore the wilderness of Tasmania.

South Island, New Zealand

If you are comfortable driving long distances and fond of outdoor adventure sports, New Zealand is awesome for first time solo travellers. The south island is painted pretty with stunning islands, blue dolphins, rugged glaciers, gorgeous lakes as well as exciting hikes. The friendly locals, safety and easy navigations make it all the more simpler to cover the island with ease. You can also consider taking buses and trains, which are generally convenient and quite inexpensive.

Spain

Spain is filled with so many attractions – fascinating museums, beautiful landscapes, mesmerizing architecture and vibrant cities. It also has a great hostel culture and many international expats, meaning there is always an event happening in the city. Head out to the less touristy, small and beautiful islands such as Menorca, sample a paella in Valencia or wander around the elegant plazas of Granada, one can spend weeks in solitude and yet, not be alone.   

Japan

Japan is one of the cleanest, safest, most polite and one of the most organized countries that solo travellers can experience, though language and translation can be a hassle. It is also one of the most unique in terms of culture, food and mastery of technology in terms of everything, from art museums to even bathrooms. If you are travelling solo for the first time, you can consider staying at one of the capsule hotels, which is similar to a hostel. It is also the perfect place to practice the art of dining alone.

Norway

It may not be the first choice on all solo travellers’ list but its high safety ranking makes it a convenient destination for the more seasoned travellers. Some of its destinations can be quite remote but the country is very safe with a low crime rate, so hitchhiking may not seem intimidating. If you’ve ever wanted to see the Northern Lights, stunning fjords, and glaciers, Norway is the ideal destination. As well as beautiful terrain are opportunities to see whales, reindeer and even polar bears. 

Germany

There’s plenty to do in this country such as visiting the galleries, joining an alternative street art tour, and shopping at the flea markets. When you’ve had enough of the artistic scene in cities like Berlin, you can hop on a train and go Stuttgart, and visit the castles to enjoy the beautiful nature Germany has to offer. The country is safe, navigation is a breeze, English is widely spoken, the locals are pretty helpful – Germany checks all of the boxes for first time solo travelers.
